AA warns fines for uninsured driving pose little deterrent

AA Insurance has welcomed the planned increase in the fixed penalty fine for driving without insurance from £200 to £300 but warned that it will do little to deter those who habitually drive without cover.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, claimed that the development will catch those who had perhaps neglected to renew their cover promptly or those who found themselves accidentally uninsured, citing examples including after a long period overseas or in hospital.

However he warned: "Many uninsured drivers are young men who may already have several motoring offences to their name.
