MPs criticise government over flood defences

The Commons Public Accounts Committee has criticised the government over flood defences and urged the Association of British Insurers to renew its statement of principles on flood insurance.

Speaking at the publication of the Flood Risk Management in England report, Margaret Hodge MP, chair of the Committee of Public Accounts, highlighted that with over 800,000 properties at risk of flooding in England and flood damage costing at least £1.1bn annually, flood protection was a national priority.

However she warned that no-one appeared to be taking responsibility.

Ms Hodges said: "... it is unclear where the buck stops and who is ultimately responsible for managing the risk of flooding
