Three leading insurers are backing a new venture aimed at reducing
personal injury and employers' liability claims costs.

ReIntra is a medical and vocational consultancy set up by Bavarian Re
(Bayerische Ruck) which works with accident victims to help them return to
work as soon as possible.

It is based on a similar venture which Bavarian Re set up in Germany
specifically for motor accident victims.

The scheme has been piloted in the UK over the last 18 months with Iron
Trades, Royal & SunAlliance and Zurich Financial Services. Now the three
insurers are rolling it out nationwide.

Ashton West, general manager, claims, at Iron Trades, told PB that the
scheme is aimed at more serious accident victims.

"At the moment, relatively serious accident victims get excellent care in
the A&E ward, but once they are discharged, there is often no
co-ordination in the care and service they need to help them back to
work," said Mr West.

"ReIntra will liaise with doctors, physiotherapists, the social services,
occupational therapists and so on to ensure the rehabilitation process is
managed more effectively."

Heather Smith, national claims manager at RSA, said: "It is very early
days yet, but we are hopeful it will help to reduce our costs on injury
claims."

For the less serious injuries, Iron Trades has set up its own in-house
scheme called Managed Care.

This facility is being offered to mid to large corporate clients
(companies with more than 100 staff) and is designed for injured employees
who are off work for more than five days.

Managed Care employs the expertise of Maitland Medical Services, which
liaises with the health service to manage and minimise the employee's
period of absence from work.
