Gross written premium at specialist Lloyd's insurer Chaucer climbed 22.7% to £594m with a record profit before tax of £86m, compared to £11.9m in 2005. The combined ratio improved from 103.3% in 2005 to 81.1% last year. Ewen Gilmour, chief executive officer of Chaucer, said: "2006 was an exceptional year. After the challenges of 2005, the industry again demonstrated its unerring capacity to surprise, but this time more agreeably."
