The Department of Transport has said that the number of people killed in road accidents in 2006 fell, by 1% from 3201 in 2005 to 3172 in 2006. A total of 31 845 people were killed or seriously injured in 2006, 1% fewer than in 2005. There were 258 404 road casualties in Great Britain in 2006, 5% less than in 2005.
