Axa has announced plans to cut 700 UK jobs this year as part of a major strategic refocus, which will see the insurer cease promoting its direct brand.

The move, part of the insurer's three-year strategy, means an initial 220 call centre jobs will be hit at its Morecambe and Darlington offices.

A further 230 are expected to be outsourced to India.

The refocus follows Axa's strategy to reduce its combined ratio, which sought and achieved a figure of 104%. It has also hit its targets to increase
