There were 4% fewer road accidents involving personal injuries last year, according to the latest Department for Transport statistics. Although the number of people killed fell to an all-time low, motorcyclist deaths and serious injuries rose to 6,737 out of a total casualty figure of 23,459, up 1%. Child deaths, which were down 20% in 2007, also hit a record low of 121. Total fatalities in 2007 were 2,943 lower than in 2006.
