Insurance fraud hits £1.34bn as criminals target bigger payouts

fraud-beads

The value of insurance fraud detected by insurers jumped 14% to £1.34bn in 2025, despite the number of fraudulent claims falling, according to the Association of British Insurers.

Insurers detected 93,900 fraudulent claims during the year, down 2.7% on 2024, but the average value of a bogus claim increased to £14,300.

That was the second-highest average on record, behind the £14,600 recorded in 2022, suggesting fraudsters are increasingly targeting higher-value payouts.

Motor

Motor insurance continued to account for the largest share of detected claims fraud, with 51,900 cases worth £625m uncovered in 2025.

The motor figures represented 55% of all detected fraudulent claims
