David Harlow, the co-founder of Wales-headquartered broker Quote Detective, part of fintech PH Innovate Group, reveals the plans to grow the business at pace in the next 18 months with a new MGA arm while sticking to its mantra of serving customers in underserved motor markets.

Q: How did you start in insurance?

I was on the management training scheme at Commercial Union in 1993. It was a wonderful company but I wasn’t really a big company man, if I’m honest. So I turned to the broking side of things and in 2000 set up Insure Your Motor.

Q: You were ahead of the curve going online-led, backed by a call centre, how did you get clients?

It was very early days [for internet trading], and the comparison sites weren’t around. We used to get a lot of business from pay per click
