Brown confirms 6 May as election date

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that the UK general election will be held on Thursday 6 May.

It will be the first election fought as leader by any of the men at the head of the three main parties.

Mr Brown, Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg will also be involved in the first ever live televised debates between party leaders.
