A total of two-thirds of the UK's dams are unsafe, with the potential for massive flooding, Professor David Crichton has warned.

Citing data that has not yet been published by the government, Crichton, a member of the Benfield Hazard Research Centre, said that dam failures do not only happen overseas.

"The UK is also at risk from dam failures," he said. "69% of reservoirs in the UK are not safe. However, dam breaks are kept secret by the government. This report will only be published in 2009."
