Launched on 26 July 2006, the Insurance Fraud Bureau was formed to provide a cost effective, tactical solution for the detection and prevention of organised, cross-industry fraud. On the eve of its first anniversary, John Beadle reflects on the events of the past year

Before looking at the achievements of the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) during the past 12 months, it is worth reviewing how things were handled prior to its formation. Previously, insurers predominately attempted to manage suspected organised fraud through a variety of informal methods between themselves.

Unfortunately, this fragmented approach hampered the identification of networks, led to the collation of incomplete evidence and prevented the building of robust cases to hand over to the police
