Retirement age mooted in Europeam courts
A landmark case that could affect millions of Britons will hit the European Court of Justice on Monday, July 2, according to a top City lawyer.
The ECJ will be asked to decide if it is legal for private UK firms to retire people on or after their 65th birthday as a matter of course.
The current Age Discrimination rules allow this, if a set procedure is followed.
Dorothy Henderson, a partner at City law firm, Travers Smith, said: “The case is being brought by Heyday, part of Age Concern, who are challenging the UK’s default retirement age of 65.
