Biba welcomes suggestion of council tax band H being included in Flood Re

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has welcomed the prospect of council tax band H properties being included in Flood Re.

Insurance Age understands that the government has been weighing up the possibility of bringing such properties into the fold.

Until now Flood Re has come under criticism from several quarters due its failure to include band H properties.

Both Biba and the British Property Federation have been among the most vocal critics regarding the absence of cover for this category of property.

In a statement released to Insurance Age, Biba chief executive Steve White, said the trade body was pleased that it appeared that the government had listened to calls to remove the exclusion of band H properties from the Flood Re arrangements.

"We have lobbied hard for this protection for homeowners, but the government needs to go further," he said.

"It is a retrograde step to exclude small businesses and let properties, which are currently afforded protection in the existing Statement of Principles."
