The new CEO of the Chartered Insurance Institute Sian Fisher explains why the need to promote education and insurance led her to take on the job

When I was at school my mother showed me a photograph of her and my grandmother in the main quadrangle of University College, Oxford. My grandmother was from a miner’s family in South Wales, won a scholarship to the local grammar school but didn’t go because her father was injured in a mining accident and the family were quickly destitute. She said to my mother: “I wish I had had the chance to study here.” I did. Why? Because I had free, socially insured education, free, socially insured health
