When Joe Henderson set up JE Henderson in Scunthorpe in 1986 it was a decision born of necessity. He had worked in insurance previously, at a firm that has since been acquired by Aon, but had just spent eight years working as company secretary for a construction company, an ex-client from his broking days.
His departure was amicable. The company had completed a successful financial turnaround and was set to float on the stock market which left him “a bit in limbo”. So he created his firm with
