Agenda: Selling up and cashing in

Tony Cornell

Something is happening in the UK private insurance market. Of the top 20 insurers in 2008, more than a third - seven - have been sold or are up for sale. This could either be good or bad news.

One view is that sellers believe the current outlook is so good it is the right time to cash in and invest the money elsewhere. A different take is that the good times are over and it is better to sell now while there is value, or it could be because the need to raise capital is paramount and the disposal of non-core business is a good way to achieve this. This last reason seems the most likely as nearly all the sellers are not UK-based general insurers - but is there a deeper motive?
