Insurance Age

Time to ditch excess?

Having started in motor insurance some 35 years ago, when we had a policy excess of £50, one of the original intentions was to avoid small claims going through the insurance policy. In today's world we do not seem to see many small repair bills even on minor damage. Policy excesses range from £100 to £450.

We recently had a 50-50 claim (very common in our rural location), and it was only while thinking about the claims process, I wondered if the policy excess actually does more harm than good.
