A burning issue

Fire damage is on the up and is costing the insurance industry millions in claims every day. Allister Smith describes how businesses should reduce fire risk by implementing an appropriate management strategy

Statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show the true scale of the increasing problem of fire damage to properties: In 2008, fire claims rose by 16% on 2007 to a record £1.3bn, equating to £3.4m every day.

The ABI's figures also reveal that commercial fire damage alone costs the industry £865m, up a staggering 16% on the previous year, emphasising the importance of businesses reducing and managing their fire risks.
