The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has revealed a 140% increase in the number of new payment protection insurance (PPI) cases it received to 378,699 in the year ended 31 March 2013.

The major rise from 157,716 the year before meant that PPI made up 74% of the FOS's total new case workload.

Motor insurance complaints also rose by 7% to 7,785 (2012: 7,264) and "other types of general insurance complaints", which includes the likes of commercial vehicles and property and pet insurance, were up 15% to 6,330.

Meanwhile, buildings insurance cases only increased by 1% to 4,611 and contents insurance complaints actually dropped 3% to 2,027.
