General insurance tops regulator's complaints table

General insurance is the most complained about financial service according to the latest complaints data published by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

According to the regulator, which collates complaints reported to it, there were 2,256,172 complaints about financial services in 2011, 1,280,940 of which were received by general insurance firms, a 49% increase on the previous year.

The majority of complaints related to payment protection insurance (PPI).
