The number of fires in business and public premises in 2001 increasedby 2.5% on the previous year - with a worrying leap in the number ofblazes started deliberately, Government figures have revealed.

The period saw 34,700 fires - a figure that should set warning bellsringing, according to Tom Heward, client service director within GrantThornton's forensic and investigations services practice.

Mr Heward, whose firm analysed the Government's report, added: "Thesefigures paint a worrying picture
