The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) called for a majorrethink in the way business insurance is structured, as, it claimed, theweight of compensation culture was becoming an almost impossible burden onbusiness.

The CBI said that commercial insurance premiums had increased by 50% onaverage in the past year, and that for many businesses the cost wasbecoming critical.

The equity-market crash, the increase in industrial diseases and the risein the cost of damages had left most businesses
