A typical commuter town, Chelmsford is home to a wide selection of small businesses and offers easy access to London. Jessica Pothering asks if it is this very ordinariness that makes its insurance market stand out

Arriving at the South Woodham Ferrers train station just nine miles south of Chelmsford, you would be forgiven for thinking you had landed in a particularly isolated part of the country. Built in the mid 1970s, it is mostly a commuter town, though it is certainly hard to imagine that London is only a 40 minute journey away. A sign outside of the station pointing towards the town centre leads you down the main road past quiet, residential properties into the town plaza, a 10 minute walk away. The
