Property sums insured and rebuild cost gap rises more than 10%

The combined difference between declared buildings sums insured and rebuild costs of nearly 47,000 properties assessed by RebuildCostASSESSMENT.com has reached approximately £20.12bn.

The figure in its latest annual findings was around £2.36bn higher than in comparable 2025 data.

Based on 46,917 rebuild cost assessments carried out across the UK, the company’s 2026 Property Insurance Infographic found underinsurance accounted for £15.61bn of the gap, compared with £4.51bn linked to overinsurance.

RebuildCostASSESSMENT.com observed underinsurance has fallen each year since 2022 – when it affected 83% of properties – to 67% now.

Overinsurance moved in the opposite
