Jensten’s Martin Swann reflects on one day, eight specialist teams and real opportunities

Martin Swann Jensten

Jensten will bring together eight of its businesses and specialist divisions on stand 54 at Broker Expo 2026. Ahead of the event, Martin Swann, managing director – specialty and London Markets, shares what brokers can expect from the Jensten teams and considers some of the opportunities shaping the insurance market.

At Broker Expo our focus will be on how specialist knowledge, market access and strong relationships can help brokers deliver better outcomes for their clients.

Jensten Underwriting will discuss its appetite and propositions across commercial, liability, property, motor and personal lines. Jensten London Markets will share insights into London Market placement, new product development and how its relationships and sector expertise can support brokers with more complex or difficult-to-place risks.

Our schemes businesses will also bring experience from their specialist sectors.

Schemes

Darwin Clayton Partner Brokers provides access to specialist schemes for industries including cleaning, facilities management, fire protection and security.

Robert Gerrard is known for its long-standing expertise in the lift industry, while Ravenhall Rural specialises in insurance for equestrian businesses and clients.

Travel Risk Professionals supports tour operators, travel agents and tour guides with tailored insurance and risk-related services. Basil Fry & Company provides specialist expertise in removals and storage, self-storage and commercial property.

Completing the line-up is Jensten Network that will be available to speak with insurance professionals and independent brokers wanting to launch, grow or plan their eventual exit from a brokerage.

Through Coversure and Jensten Broker Network, it offers flexible routes supported by access to markets, regulatory guidance, client money handling, business development and M&A expertise.

Bringing these teams together means brokers can explore a broad range of opportunities in one place.

How can attendees make the most of their day?

The Broker Expo strapline says that “one day out of the office could create real opportunities” – but attendees should arrive with an idea of what they want to achieve.

Review the exhibitor list, identify the people who could help with your priorities and prepare a few specific questions. However, avoid scheduling every minute. Some of the best opportunities come from unexpected introductions and informal conversations. Be open about the challenges you are experiencing, whether that involves placing a difficult risk, developing business in a specialist sector or planning the next stage of your brokerage.

Which buzzwords will dominate Broker Expo?

“AI” will inevitably be one of the most repeated terms, alongside “automation”, “data”, “capacity”, “resilience” and “underinsurance”.

The more useful question is what these words mean in practice. Technology should remove unnecessary administration, improve access to information and help brokers and underwriters reach decisions efficiently. It should not replace professional judgement, experience or personal relationships.

“Partnership” will also be heard frequently. It only carries weight when demonstrated through accessibility, honest communication and a willingness to work through challenging risks.

What recent innovation has impressed us most?

The development of digital trading and placement platforms has been particularly encouraging. The best technology makes it easier to submit quality information, communicate with underwriters and obtain decisions quickly.

The real opportunity lies in combining technology with human expertise, rather than treating one as a replacement for the other.

What lesson would we give the next generation?

Our Insurance Academy lesson would be: “How to ask better questions.”

Technical knowledge is essential, but effective broking and underwriting begins with curiosity. Strong brokers and underwriters do not simply ask what cover a client wants. They seek to understand how the business operates, what could interrupt it and what matters most to the people behind it.

Listening carefully, challenging assumptions and explaining complex subjects clearly will remain valuable skills, regardless of how technology develops.

Who has played a blinder this year?

Independent brokers collectively deserve that recognition. They have continued to guide clients through changing market conditions, emerging risks, economic uncertainty and evolving expectations.

They have adapted while maintaining the personal relationships that distinguish independent broking. That combination of resilience, expertise and commitment deserves recognition.

Why should brokers feel optimistic about 2027?

As risks become more complex, the value of knowledgeable, professional advice becomes clearer. Businesses still need brokers who understand their circumstances, identify gaps in cover and advocate for them when it matters.

Broker Expo is the ideal place to start those conversations. Visit Jensten on stand 54 at the NEC Birmingham on 8 October to meet our teams, discuss your priorities and explore how we can support you, your business and your clients.
