Ghost broker ordered to pay back £17,000

The fraudster has been given three months to pay money back or face jail.

A ghost broker, originally sentenced to 16 months imprisonment (suspended for two years) plus 200 hours of unpaid work in May, has additionally been ordered to pay back £17,000 to those he defrauded.

At a confiscation hearing at Guildford Crown Court 33-year-old Renan Gomes, of Adelphi Road, Epsom, was warned that if he did not pay back the money within three months he could face nine months in prison.

Gomes previously admitted to setting up over 100 fraudulent car insurance policies.

Broking profits fall at Saga

Underlying profit before tax in Saga’s insurance broking arm fell to £39.8m for the year ended 31 January 2024, compared with £71.5m in the previous period.
