Steve Wood, Ecclesiastical managing director for UK and Ireland, said the insurer was focused on "deepening and strengthening" its broker relationships after reporting a return to profit. The insurer achieved an overall pre-tax profit of £79m in 2009, the second highest in its history, compared with a £22.5m loss the previous year. Underwriting profit increased to £27m (£1.9m loss in 2008), gross written premium rose by 11% to £427.7m (2008: £403.6m) and the overall combined ratio stood at 89.6%
