Steady EDI

EDI has not been in use for very long, having only become a genuine business tool in the late 1990s. Yet, compared with internet technology, some consider it to be outdated. However, Matt Warner explains that it is still effective and advises brokers not to rock the boat too much

Electronic data interchange (EDI) does not use the web or any of its protocols, much less any of the latest eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML) solutions that power imarket and much of e-business. Electronic it may be, but e-commerce it is not. However, it is its relative simplicity that gives EDI so much of its strength and reliability. It has become the major tool for private motor insurance, and there will not be any major changes soon.

"It was good technology for its time," says Philip Nunn
