Bad luck or else plain statistics suggest that one in four men and one in five women will suffer heart disease, a stroke or cancer before reaching 65. While we have ever-improving chances of successfully surviving such illnesses, the treatment and any long-term disability can have its cost for patient and family alike - income curtailed, bills and debts unpaid, extra costs of care and attention. Not the circumstances to encourage a spirited recuperation.
